Description:

Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski returns for a second week on The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2009-10 season. He is joined by Benedetto Lupo, bronze medalist at the 1989 Van Cliburn Competition, who makes his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in the concerto Schumann composed for his wife, Clara, in the 1840s. The year 2010 marks the birth-bicentennial of Robert Schumann, whose powerful Romantic stamp on music has been felt ever since his untimely death in 1856. Maestro Jurowski maintains the tone of high drama with the Tragic Overture of Brahms--a composer the Schumanns discovered and promoted--and Beethoven's ruggedly defiant "Eroica" Symphony.
